Tip of the month August

August = Dog Days of Summer

By Dr. Michael Windley DVM

Although the temperature has been high the last few months, August is known for the high humidity mixed with the high temperatures. This combination of heat and humidity can cause heat stress or heat stroke in animals within minutes of excess exposure. Most pets that are affected by this combination are indoor cats and dogs that are not used to lengthy times outside.

Heat Stress signs and symptoms : Early signs are panting, flushed or red skin due to constricted blood vessels

Later signs are sunken eyes, dehydration, increase in body temperature

Heat Stroke signs and symptoms :Early signs are loss of balance, weakness of extremities

Later signs are vomiting, decrease mental awareness, convulsions

You can avoid the risks associated with the heat by providing plenty of shade outdoors, plenty of water to drink, short visits outside in the daytime hours (for those pets not accustomed to the outdoors), low stress activities, and supervision of your pet while outside.
